Live Demonstration of the Beneficial Ownership Secure Search (BOSS) System Highlights Confidentiality and Data Security

Date: February 13, 2017

HONG KONG, February 9, 2017 – A project overview presentation and demonstration of the BVI’s newly established Beneficial Ownership Secure Search (BOSS) System was conducted from London this afternoon by BDO on behalf of BVI Finance for BVI practitioners in the Asia Pacific Region.

Ms. Elise Donovan, Director, BVI House Asia, introduced the session and welcomed everyone attending the live WebEx online.

Mr. Neil Smith, Financial Secretary of the Virgin Islands, said that the BOSS system was developed by the BVI to satisfy the needs of information exchange treaty partners, particularly in the areas of tax and law enforcement, in a fast and efficient manner while also addressing the confidentiality concerns of the industry.

The technical aspects of the BOSS system were introduced by Mr. Ryan Geluk, Director of Technology Risk, BDO. Mr. Geluk discussed the system’s project schedule, technical design and major requirement priorities as they pertain to corporate service providers (registered agents) and the local BVI competent authorities. He observed that the system’s database would be maintained in a G8 country that was not the UK, the US or Russia. He also stated that the system was not a centralized data center, but rather a group of separate and discreet repositories, and that by putting the data in Microsoft’s Azure Cloud, the highest level of encryption and data security would be maintained.
